About backyard ultras

A backyard ultra is the simplest race there is and one of the hardest. Every hour, on the hour, runners set off on a 4.167 mile (6.7km) loop. Finish inside the hour and you rest until the bell, then go again. Miss the start, or the cut-off, and you're out. It carries on until only one runner can complete a lap that nobody else can — 24 laps is exactly 100 miles.

The UK scene has exploded, from small farm-field loops to big trail events that feed into the national and world team championships. Below is every UK backyard ultra we can find, checked against the organisers' own sites.

How far is a backyard ultra lap?
Each lap is 4.167 miles (6.7km), so 24 laps adds up to exactly 100 miles.
Do I need to have run an ultra before?
No. Many runners use a backyard as their first ultra, because you can stop after any lap and still be credited with the distance. Plenty of people set a target like six laps — a marathon — and call it there.
What happens if I finish a lap early?
You rest. Most runners aim to finish each lap with 5–15 minutes to spare to eat, change and sort feet before the next bell.
Who wins?
The last runner to complete a lap on their own. Everyone else is recorded as a DNF, which is part of the format's charm.
